Most public companies with calendar fiscal year ends are currently releasing their H1 results.
For those of us managing strategic enterprise accounts, this isn’t just market noise. It’s a moment of truth:
Are your customers delivering on the growth targets they laid out in January?
Or are they quietly changing course to deal with unexpected headwinds?
Here’s what we know so far:
✅ Microsoft is full steam ahead. Their Q2 results showed a 10% YoY revenue bump, powered by demand for AI and cloud. The message is clear: digital investment is alive and well, if you’re aligned to the right priorities.
⚠️ Unilever, meanwhile, is tightening the reins. Flat volumes, rising costs, and an executive team laser-focused on profitability. The tone was less about expansion, more about discipline. That means that for partners selling into innovation or long-cycle projects, priorities may be shifting.
I Missed the Signal, and It Almost Cost Me My Year
Eight years ago, I was partnering with a key enterprise customer: a big brand, with whom we had strong relationships, engaged stakeholders who could clearly articulate the value we were providing, and plenty of momentum for additional products aligned deliver against their strategic priorities.
But I wasn’t paying attention to the financial signals.
I missed an update about a failed product launch. The fallout? A sudden freeze on non-essential corporate services. My solution, which had strong traction, got flagged as “nice to have.”
I found out too late to reposition.
That single miss put me on the back foot heading into Q4. And what followed was the most stressful, uncertain, and challenging year of my career to date. Pipeline dried up. Forecasts slipped, and I was left scrambling to salvage deals that were never going to close.
I told myself it was just bad timing, but deep down, I knew better. I hadn’t done the work to truly understand how my customer’s strategy was evolving.
Trusted Advisors Track the Money
If you want to be seen as a strategic partner, and not just a vendor, you’ve got to know what your customers are up against.
Financial results reveal the big picture:
What’s working?
What’s under pressure?
What bets are they doubling down on?
If you’re not reviewing their earnings calls, analyst notes, or half-year updates, you’re operating with a blindfold on.
Are You Reading Between the (Bottom) Lines?
Are you keeping tabs on your top customers’ financials? Have you ever caught a risk early, or been blindsided like I was? What helps you connect the dots between strategy and solution?
